Clan Makay Spotlight

August 15, 2004, Drum Major Don McKee, Honorary Life Member of Clan Mackay Society, is the recipient of the first annual award of the Post 100, Scottish American Military Society (SAMS) Commemorative Sword.  This award is presented to the winner of the Drum Major competition held each year during the Colorado Scottish Festival and Highland Games.  This year's trophy, an engraved regimental basket hilt sword, was presented in memory of Dik Low who passed away last year.  A staunch member of SAMS Post 100 and long time Drum Major for numerous Pipe Bands here in Colorado; Dik was a much respected member of the Colorado Scottish community.  His widow, Marg Low, presented the sword to Drum Major McKee.  She was assisted by Rose Blackham, wife of the Clan Mackay Commissioner for Colorado, Rick Blackham.  Rick, also a member of SAMS, was part of the color guard for the award ceremony.

Don McKee has, for years, been a highly regarded figure in the Scottish scene here in Colorado.  Many know Don as the award winning sculptor who designed and produced the gold collar of office for the Lord Lyon, King of Arms of Scotland.  Don is also known nationally for his beautifully rendered Scottish belt buckles and other pieces of sculpture featuring Scottish Highland figures.  For the past several years, Don has been the featured Drum Major for massed pipe and drum bands during several of the Scottish Festivals held here in Colorado as well as in other parts of the country.  More information about Don McKee can be found at his link on the Clan Mackay Society USA web site.
